Dancing In The Moonlight

A New Play exploring the Formative Years of Philip Lynott. Written and Performed by Miles Mlambo Directed by Chris Gates.

Bearing an uncanny resemblance to his subject, actor and theatre-maker Miles Mlambo takes us on a rollercoaster journey through the formative years of legendary Thin Lizzy founder and frontman, Philip Lynott.

A black child born to an unmarried Irish mother in London during the ‘No Blacks, No Dogs, No Irish’ years, financial circumstances force Philomena Lynott to send her young son to live with his grandparents in 1950’s Dublin. In a spellbinding show, Miles relates how the young Philip deals with being the only black kid in school – and most of Dublin for that matter. His discovery of music and poetry, his first bands, his first girlfriend, his experiences in the Dublin arts scene and his frequent trips to Manchester to stay in The Biz, Philomena’s hotel for touring artists.

Exploring racism, parenthood and identity, this hauntingly accurate portrayal offers an amazing insight into Philip Lynott’s formative years and how they shaped him to become one of the most iconic figures in Irish music history. A distinction that has only grown with time.

The sky’s the limit for one of rock’s hidden stories that deserves wider attention. The Edinburgh Reporter.
